Diameter and pitch. In inch sizes, 1/2-13 means half-inch nominal with 13 threads per inch, which is UNC coarse. 1/2-20 is the fine thread, UNF. Below 1/4 in the diameter is a number gauge: #10-24 coarse, #10-32 fine. Metric reads the other way round: M12 × 1.75 is 12 mm with 1.75 mm between crests, and if no pitch is given it is coarse.
Length. Measured from under the head to the tip on hex and socket head cap screws. Flat heads are the exception: their length is overall, because the head sits flush in the countersink.
Grade or alloy. This is where most lists go wrong. "Hardened" is not a grade. Grade 5, Grade 8, A574, 18-8, 316 and B7 are. If your list says "stainless" with nothing after it, our reply will ask which one before it quotes.
Finish. Plain, black oxide, clear zinc, yellow zinc or hot-dip galvanised. Galvanised screws need nuts tapped oversize to clear the coating, and we never zinc-plate stainless. The configurator blocks those combinations before you send them.
"3/8 bolts" fits 3/8-16 and 3/8-24. They do not thread into each other. Send the pitch or send a sample.
A Grade 8 screw on a Grade 2 nut strips the nut first. See the matching table on nuts and washers.
Commodity sizes go out in full boxes: 100 at small diameters, 50 or 25 as diameter climbs. The section page says which.
Steel bar moves with the mill, plated fasteners move with zinc, and a box of 7/8-9 Grade 8 costs what the last pallet cost. A printed price list for 22 lines would be wrong by the end of the month. So every section states the unit we sell in and the reply puts a figure against it for your exact list.
For cut blanks the basis has two parts: the material per foot or per blank, and a per-cut charge for the saw time and deburring. Twelve pieces cut from one bar cost less per piece than twelve pieces each from a different size. The reply breaks that out line by line, so you can see which cut is driving the total and change it if you want to.
A quote is good for the date written on it. Nothing is picked or cut until you confirm in writing.
Thread, length, grade, finish, count. We reply in writing with what is on the shelf, what is not, and when the rest can be picked up or shipped.
