Eleven sections. The ones that stop a job when they are missing.

Each module shows the size range we carry, the material or grade, and how it is priced. Nothing on this rail is a commodity mystery part. If a section does not list your size, send it anyway and we will say in writing whether we can get it and when.

MOD 03 / CountWeigh, gauge, bag, label
SCALE 01 / Count by weight3/8-16 SHCS, black oxide
Socket head cap screws heaped on a scale pan beside an empty parts bag, counted by weight
Ten pieces are weighed first to set the piece weight. The scale counts the rest, and a short count is topped up from the same lot, never a different one.
Counted, not guessed

A box of 100 has a hundred in it, and the label says which lot they came from.

We count on a parts scale, not by eye. A bag of 1/2-13 Grade 8 that comes back eight short costs a millwright half a shift, so the count is set from a ten-piece sample of the actual lot on the bench, not a number from a chart.

Graded threads get a go/no-go check before they are bagged. A ring gauge goes on a sample of the screws, a plug gauge goes into a sample of the nuts. If the go side will not run on by hand, the lot does not go out.

  1. 01

    Sample and set

Ten pieces from the lot set the piece weight on the scale. Mixed lots are never counted together.

  2. 02

    Gauge the thread

Go/no-go ring on screws, plug on nuts. Fastener grades only; consumables skip this step.

  3. 03

    Bag and label

Thread, length, grade or alloy, finish, count and lot go on the label in that order.

  4. 04

    Paint the blanks

Saw-cut bar and plate leave deburred, with the cut length written on the piece in paint marker.

Grade 8 means six radial lines on the head.

If there are no lines, we did not sell it to you. This is the table the counter works from when a buyer asks what will hold, and why we stock some grades and refuse others.

Zinc on a Grade 8 screw is yellow for a reason. Plating a hardened screw can trap hydrogen, and the plater bakes it out afterwards. Ask before you put plain-finish alloy outdoors, and ask before you replate anything over 150 ksi yourself.

Stainless numbers are lower than people expect. 18-8 is about half the tensile of a Grade 8, so swapping stainless into a load path to stop rust is a strength downgrade. We will say so in the reply if your list does it.

MOD 05 / ConfiguratorLive designation and warnings
Build the line before you send it

Pick the family, thread, grade and finish. The configurator writes the designation and tells you what it implies.

Half the inquiries we get have one field missing. Usually the thread pitch, sometimes the finish. The configurator will not let you combine B7 with a hex head, will not offer zinc on stainless, and warns you when hot-dip galvanised needs oversize-tapped nuts.

Blank mode does the arithmetic for bar and plate: total stock with 1/8 in of saw kerf per cut, and the approximate weight at 0.2836 lb per cubic inch for steel or 0.0975 for aluminum. Whatever you build lands in the inquiry form as a ready spec line.

MOD 06 / RefusalsWho this counter is not for

What we will not do.

Sell unmarked bolts

Hex cap screws without grade marks and stainless without a stated alloy are not on our shelves. A mystery bolt in a load path is the failure we see most often at the counter: a replacement pulled from a coffee can, threaded into a Grade 8 joint, and stretched on the first hard load.

Break boxes of commodity sizes

We quote by the box of 100 because that is how they come off the pallet. If you need four 3/8-16 × 1 in screws, a hardware store is quicker and cheaper. Larger diameters, B7 sets and cut blanks are the exceptions, and each section says so.

Quote over the phone

Call with a question, by all means. A price goes out in writing against a written list, because "half-inch bolts" spoken over a shop floor has turned into the wrong pitch and the wrong grade more than once.

Swap in an "equivalent"

If we are out of what you asked for, the reply says so and offers the alternative by name. Nothing gets substituted silently. We also make no certification claims on your behalf: the label carries what we know about the lot, nothing more.

MOD 07 / InquiryWritten reply, no sales call

Send the thread, the length, the grade and the count.

We reply in writing with what is on the shelf and what is not, a price against the basis for each line, and a lead time where something has to come in. Phone or email, one of them is enough.

18-8 galls if you run it dry and fast. A dab of anti-seize costs less than a seized nut, and we will add a line for it if your list is all stainless.
