A36 steel plate blanks

A36 is the structural plate everybody welds. Base plates, gussets, brackets, mounting pads, tab stock for fab work. It is hot-rolled, so the faces carry blue-grey mill scale and the thickness runs a few thousandths either side of nominal. That is normal for the product. If you need flat and parallel faces, you are buying a blank to machine, and you should say so.

We stock 3/16, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4 and 1 in. Blanks are saw-cut rather than burned, so there is no heat-affected edge to grind back before you weld or drill near it. Mill scale stays on unless you ask. Scale comes off with a flap disc or a pickle; it does not come off with paint, and paint over scale lifts within a year outdoors.

Line 20 / PLT-6061

6061 aluminum plate blanks

6061-T651 is the plate version of the bar alloy, stress-relieved by stretching so it stays flatter when you pocket it. That last part matters. Mill out half a block of plain T6 and it can spring a few thousandths; T651 moves far less. Fixture plates, enclosure panels, adapter plates and machine-bed tooling all start here.

Thickness from 1/4 to 2 in. The protective film is kept on both faces through the cut and the deburr, so the blank arrives without scuffs from the rack. Leave it on until the part is in the vise.

The failure we see most

Someone sends "six pieces, 4 × 6" with no thickness and no alloy. We reply asking. That costs a day. The second most common: a 1/4 in aluminum blank requested for a part that gets bent 90 degrees. 6061-T651 cracks on a tight bend. Use 5052 from a sheet supplier for that; we do not stock it and will not pretend 6061 is the same.

Blank, not finished part. A saw-cut blank is sized for machining or welding. Holes, slots, chamfers and flatness to a drawing are your shop's work. We do not mill, drill or laser.

How to send a plate cut list

What happens after you send it
  1. One line per size

Material, thickness, width, length, count. Width is the shorter side. Write fractions or decimals, not both mixed on one line.

    A36 1/2 × 6 × 8, qty 12
  2. Flag anything critical

If one edge must be the reference, or the faces will be machined, say so in notes. We orient the cut accordingly.

    Notes field
  3. Read the written reply

Price per blank for each line, what is on the rack in that thickness, pickup or freight. Heavy plate goes freight; a dozen 1 in blanks at 8 × 10 in is around 270 lb.

    Before anything is cut
  4. Confirm, collect

Once you confirm in writing, the blanks are cut, marked and stacked by size for pickup at the counter or shipping.
