Tool 02 / Option configurator

Build the spec, see what it implies.

Pick a socket head cap screw, a Grade 8 hex cap screw, B7 studs with 2H nuts or threaded rod cut to length, or switch to blanks for 1018, 1045, 6061 and A36. The designation, head marking, tensile figure, matching nut and the warnings that matter update as you change each line.

What the readout is telling you

Read 01 / Designation

Thread first, then length

1/2-13 × 2 in Hex Cap Screw, SAE Grade 8, Yellow Zinc. Diameter, threads per inch, length under the head, family, grade, finish. That order is how the bin is labelled and how the reply is written back.

Read 02 / Marking

The head tells the grade

Grade 5 shows three radial lines, Grade 8 shows six. Stainless and socket heads carry none, so the grade is on the lot label. If a hex screw in a load path has a blank head, it was not sold here.

Read 03 / Tensile

Minimums, not typicals

Grade 5 is 120 ksi to 1 in, Grade 8 is 150 ksi, A574 socket heads 170 to 180 ksi, B7 125 ksi to 2-1/2 in. Cold-worked 18-8 and 316 sit around 70 ksi; annealed stock runs lower.

Read 04 / Box

Rounded up to the box

Boxes of 100 up to 3/8 in, 50 to 5/8 in, 25 above. Ask for 130 at 1/4 in and the readout shows two boxes. We quote by the box because that is how they come off the pallet.

Read 05 / Kerf

Blanks eat 1/8 in per cut

Blank mode adds the saw kerf to every piece and works out weight from density: 0.2836 lb/in³ for steel, 0.0975 for aluminum. Use it to check whether a job ships in a box or on a pallet.

Read 06 / Blocks

Combinations it refuses

B7 only as stud or rod. Stainless never plated. SAE grades never on a metric thread. Greyed options are not oversights; they are combinations we will not supply.

Warnings it raises, and why

When the readout flags a combination
CombinationFlagWhat to do
Grade 8, zinc platedHydrogen embrittlementPlain finish or a baked lot above 1/2 in under sustained load
Hot-dip galvanizedNut bindsOversize-tapped nuts, supplied with the screws
18-8 or 316, anyGallingAnti-seize, slower driver speed

Low-carbon rodNot gradedHangers and light duty only; B7 for load

Zinc on a Grade 8 screw is yellow for a reason. Ask before you put plain-finish alloy outdoors.

The configurator is a reading aid. It does not check stock. The written reply does, and it can disagree with the screen if the shelf says otherwise.
