SEC 03 / NUT-WSH

A Grade 8 screw on a Grade 2 nut fails in the nut, which is why the nut grade is on the label.

Bulk nuts and washers by the box, #10 through 1 in: Grade 5 and Grade 8 finished hex nuts, nylon-insert lock nuts, SAE and USS flat washers, through-hardened Grade 8 flats, split lock and fender washers, in zinc and 18-8. 100 to a box, matched to the bolt grade and the bolt finish.

Hex nuts and nylon-insert lock nuts

Grade 5 and Grade 8 finished hex nuts in zinc, plus nylon-insert lock nuts across the same range, #10 to 1 in. Grade 8 nuts have the corner marks and a thicker body; the grade is not optional information, because a nut is sized to strip before a bolt breaks only when the two match. Our nuts are stocked next to the screws they belong with, same finish, same grade, so a bag going out with Grade 8 yellow zinc screws leaves with Grade 8 yellow zinc nuts unless you ask otherwise.

Nylon-insert nuts hold on vibration, not on load. The insert grips the bolt threads with friction and keeps the nut from backing off a guard or a sheet metal joint. Reuse costs you prevailing torque every time, so after two or three removals it is a plain nut with a scuffed collar. Heat kills it faster: anywhere near an exhaust, a motor housing or a steam line, use a plain nut with threadlocker from assembly consumables instead.

Hot-dip galvanised bolts need nuts tapped oversize to clear the coating on the threads. A standard-tapped nut will not run on, and forcing it strips the zinc off the bolt and leaves a bare steel thread in a wet joint. Tell us if the bolt is galvanised and the matching nut comes tapped for it.

Line 06 / Washers

Flat, split lock and fender washers

SAE flats for machined faces, USS flats for the wider bearing surface you want on structural steel or timber, through-hardened Grade 8 flats under hardened heads, split lock washers where someone specified them, and fender washers for sheet and panel work. Zinc plated and 18-8 stainless, #10 to 1 in, 100 to a box.

SAE and USS are not interchangeable, and the mix-up is weekly here. A 1/2 in SAE flat has a 1-1/16 in outside diameter; the USS is 1-3/8 in with a looser hole. If the washer has to sit inside a counterbore or next to a weld bead, SAE fits and USS does not. If it is spreading load on wood or thin plate, the USS is what you want.

Under a Grade 8 head use the through-hardened flat. A standard washer at that preload dishes, the bolt relaxes, and the joint reads tight while carrying nothing. Split lock washers are the other argument: they do almost nothing on a properly preloaded hard joint and flatten out, but plenty of drawings still call for them, so they are on the shelf and we will quote them without a lecture.

Say SAE or USS on the list. "1/2 in washer" is two different parts and we will come back and ask.

Nut markings vary between makers. The reply tells you what is physically in the box for your lot, and the bag label repeats it.

We quote by the box of 100 because that is how they come off the pallet.

What to check before you order a box

Three fields and a finish
01

Pitch, not just size

A 3/8-24 nut spins a quarter turn onto a 3/8-16 bolt and then jams. Send the pitch, or bring the bolt and we will gauge it.

02

Finish on both halves

Zinc nut on a plain bolt, or stainless on zinc, sets up a galvanic pair. Outdoors in Texas humidity that shows up within a season.

03

Heat on lock nuts

Nylon inserts give up above roughly 250 °F. Near exhaust or steam, use a plain nut and a medium-strength threadlocker.

04

Washer series

SAE for machined faces and counterbores, USS for spreading load on timber and plate. The outside diameter is the giveaway.

Who this section is not for

Single pieces. A box of 100 3/8-16 nuts is the smallest unit on this line, and we will tell you where to buy six instead of breaking one open. Larger diameters come in smaller boxes and the reply states the count before you commit.

We also do not stock unmarked nuts to go with unmarked bolts, and we will not supply a nut as "equivalent to Grade 8" when it is not marked as one. If we are out of what you asked for, the reply names the alternative; nothing is swapped in quietly.
