Section 04 / Rod and studs

Threaded rod cut to length, B7 studs with 2H nuts.

Zinc all-thread from 1/4 to 1 in UNC, sold by the stick or as threaded rod cut to length with the cut end chased clean. ASTM A193 B7 studs leave as sets with two A194 2H heavy hex nuts, because a B7 stud with a soft nut is a flange leak waiting for its first heat cycle.

RACK 04-A / ALL-THREADZinc / UNC
Zinc-plated threaded rods of several diameters, one freshly cut end in focus
The cut end in focus has been run through a die nut. If a nut will not start by hand on our cut, the piece goes back on the saw.
Line 04.1 / Zinc all-thread rod

Zinc all-thread rod, by the stick or cut

Low-carbon steel rod, rolled UNC thread, clear zinc plate. It hangs pipe and cable tray, clamps fixtures, ties back formwork and makes up whatever long bolt the job did not plan for. It is not a structural tension member in a load path, and we say so on the reply when the inquiry reads like one.

Sticks come in 3 ft and 6 ft. When you ask for threaded rod cut to length, we saw it, chase the cut end with a die nut so the first thread is clean, and knock the burr off with a file. Cut pieces are held to plus 1/16 in. Never short, because a hanger that is 1/16 in long gets another turn of the nut and a hanger that is short gets a new rod.

The failure we see most: someone buys a 6 ft stick, cuts it with a cutoff wheel on site, and then fights the nut for ten minutes on a mushroomed end. Have us cut it. Every piece in the bag is the same length, and the length is on the label.

BIN 04-B / B7 + 2HChromoly / plain
B7 studs with two heavy hex nuts each, laid on a flange face
Each stud is counted with its pair of nuts. You never get a box of studs and a separate box of nuts that do not add up.
Line 04.2 / B7 studs with 2H heavy hex nuts

ASTM A193 B7 studs, sold with their 2H nuts

B7 is quenched and tempered chromium-molybdenum steel, 125 ksi minimum tensile and 105 ksi minimum yield up to 2.5 in diameter. It is the default bolt for ASME flanges, valve bonnets and pump casings, where the joint sees pressure and heat at the same time. The stud end is stamped B7. The nut face is stamped 2H.

We sell B7 threaded studs with 2H nuts as a set: one stud, two A194 2H heavy hex nuts. The heavy hex pattern is 1/8 in wider across the flats than a finished nut, which spreads the load on the flange back face. Putting a Grade 5 finished nut on a B7 stud is the swap we refuse. It strips before the stud yields and you find out at hydrotest.

Length on a fully threaded stud is measured first full thread to first full thread, points excluded. Read it off the flange table for your class and give us that number. Finish is plain unless you ask, and if the flange lives outdoors on the coast, say so and we will quote what we can get.

Rule 01 / Minimum cut

Shortest piece we cut is 2 in

Below that the vise cannot hold the rod square to the blade. For shorter studs, ask about fully threaded studs instead.

Rule 02 / Kerf

Each cut eats 1/8 in

Four 18 in pieces do not come out of one 6 ft stick. Three do, with an offcut. We count kerf before we tell you how many sticks the list needs.

Rule 03 / Ends

Both ends chased, both ends chamfered

A nut must start by hand on either end. That is checked on the first and last piece of every batch.

Rule 04 / Labels

One length per bag

Mixed lengths go in separate bags, each labelled with thread, cut length and count. Nobody sorts rod on a lift.

From cut list to labelled bag

  1. You send the list

    Form, email or chat

Thread, length, count, and for B7 the flange class if you have it. A sketch photo of the hanger layout is fine.

  2. We reply in writing

    Stock and lead time

What is on the rack, how many sticks the cut list uses including kerf, and the price against each line. No phone quote without a written spec.

  3. Cut, chase, gauge

    At the saw

Rod is sawn, both ends chased, and the thread spot-checked with a go/no-go ring gauge before it is bagged.

  4. Pickup or freight

    From Market Street

Bags leave labelled. Long sticks ship bundled and taped at both ends so the plating is not chewed in transit.

Questions buyers ask at the counter

No. Low-carbon zinc rod is a hanger and fixture material. Flange bolting in pressure or temperature service is specified as A193 B7 with A194 2H nuts, and we will not quote the substitution.

On a fully threaded stud we measure first full thread to first full thread, not counting the chamfered points. That is how flange bolt tables list it, so give us the table length.

Yes. Rod is the exception to our box rule because it is priced per stick or per cut piece. One 14 in piece of 3/8-16 is a normal order.

Anyone who needs stainless or fine-thread rod as a stocked item, or anchor bolts bent to an L or J. We do not bend rod and we do not keep fine-thread sticks. Nuts and washers to go on the rod are on the nuts and washers page, and rod set into concrete usually starts at drop-in anchors.

Send the cut list.We count the sticks.

Thread, length and count per line. The written reply says how many sticks it takes after kerf and what is on the rack today.
